Vom 15.12.1929 bis 28.2.1930 war Walter Mittelholzer in Ostafrika mit einem Flugzeug unterwegs. Am 8. Jänner 1930 überflog er als Erster den Kilimandscharo, Afrikas höchsten Berg (5'895 m ü. A.).
